Competition in Banking
Анотація
Abstract Banks increasingly compete with non-banks including FinTech lenders. Sources of non-bank growth and the implications of non-bank market entry for the economy along the following dimensions are reviewed, all of which are traditionally associated with bank rents: (i) bank and non-bank funding structure and information asymmetries; (ii) regulation; (iii) location and distance; and (iv) market structure. FinTech firms’ funding structure and ability to intelligently process hard information affect financial stability and loan access, but also the greater competitive environment. Constraints on financial services that are caused by geographical frictions and reflected in measures of banking competition can be alleviated, as illustrated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
