Genesis and evolution of strategic management: theoretical and methodological foundations and industry imperatives under radical uncertainty
Анотація
The article provides a retrospective, conceptual, and empirical analysis of the genesis and evolution of strategic management as a fundamental scientific discipline and applied practice. It proves that the evolution of strategic thought is not a linear accumulation of tools but a series of shifts in dominant epistemological paradigms, emerging as an adaptive response to growing macroeconomic, technological, and geopolitical instability. The study examines the profound transition from prescriptive long-term planning models to descriptive concepts and the newest integrating paradigm of neo-strategic management based on the synthesis of the resource-based view and the concept of dynamic capabilities. Using the example of the capital-intensive renewable energy sector in Ukraine (2020–2024), the mechanisms for the practical implementation of modern strategic concepts under conditions of radical Knightian uncertainty and the systemic transition of the global macroenvironment from VUCA to the BANI paradigm are demonstrated. The transition from subsidized instruments (“green” tariff) to market adaptation mechanisms (Corporate PPA, Net Billing, distributed generation) is investigated as a manifestation of anti-fragility and emergent strategizing. The necessity of using hybrid strategic methodologies that combine scenario modeling, multi-criteria decision analysis, real options theory, and institutional mechanisms to counteract management’s cognitive biases during crises is substantiated. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the theoretical and methodological foundations of the evolution of strategic management and to empirically verify them in the extreme conditions of the renewable energy sector of Ukraine. The relevance is determined by the need to adapt classical theories to the BANI environment and radical uncertainty caused by global shocks. The methodology is based on historical-evolutionary analysis, comparative conceptual analysis of the VUCA and BANI paradigms, Knightian uncertainty theory, the resource-based view, the dynamic capabilities concept, and a case study of the Ukrainian RES sector, with financial modeling (LCOE) and institutional analysis. The results show that the evolution of strategic thought has passed through four stages according to Ansoff and ten schools according to Mintzberg, culminating in the neo-strategic paradigm. In the Ukrainian RES sector, the war forced a rapid transition from the positioning school and “green” tariff to market mechanisms and anti-fragile distributed generation, confirming the superiority of dynamic capabilities over static resources. The practical value lies in developing recommendations for hybrid strategy-formation methodologies for capital-intensive industries operating under radical uncertainty, which managers of energy companies and government regulators can use to build resilient energy systems. Keywords: strategic management, scientific schools of strategic management, dynamic capabilities, Knightian uncertainty, BANI environment, renewable energy, corporate PPAs, strategic options, anti-fragility, hybrid methodologies.
