Preservation and use of human capital of senior citizens in the context of intergenerational interaction

Background: The global aging of the population and the growing need of the elderly in various forms of social interaction actualize the problems of social adaptation, support and health of third-age citizens in modern society, intergenerational dialogue and cooperation. Purpose: To reveal the attitude of student youth to the elderly; frequency of communication with elderly relatives; to investigate whether young people help elderly people to learn information and communication technologies; to find out how young people see their well-being when they reach retirement age. Methods: This empirical sociological study used the method of surveying students of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in March-April 2022. Results: Most students treat the elderly with respect; older people are positively perceived in many social roles; most young people help older people learn gadgets, primarily their grandparents, and also support the professional development of older people. At the same time, young women are more tolerant of older people than young men. When planning their retirement future, young people are most focused on profits from their own real estate and individual savings in non-state pension funds. Conclusion: Elderly people should have the opportunity to learn and develop throughout their lives, to be socially active even in retirement. The inclusion of elderly people in various social practices, the organization of a social space tolerant to the needs of third-age citizens will mean an increase in the status of a person of respectable age in the family and society.
