The Economics of Health Equity: Financial Strategies to Address Social Determinants in Public Health
Анотація
Health inequities — systematic, avoidable, and unjust differences in health outcomes between social groups — are not only ethically unacceptable but economically costly, generating substantial losses in productivity, human capital, and social cohesion. This article examines the economics of health equity from two complementary perspectives: the economic case for investing in health equity as a driver of broader social and economic development, and the financial strategies — including progressive health financing, social protection investment, and targeted public expenditure on health-promoting social determinants — available to public health systems seeking to reduce health inequities. Drawing on health economics, social determinants research, and the Marmot Review's analysis of the economics of health equity, the paper argues that investment in the social determinants of health is not only ethically obligatory but economically rational, and that public health administrators must be equipped to make the economic case for equity-oriented public investment to political and fiscal decision-makers.
