Civil Society as a Component Part of the Cultural Field of the State
Анотація
The research focuses on the impact generated by civil society on the art processes taking place in totalitarian and post-totalitarian systems. The author states that social impact on creating or destructing of an artwork should be examined in detail. By the example of life story of the renowned Ukrainian monumental artists Ada Rybachuk and Volodymyr Melnychenko (ARVM—abbreviation for their initials) the author traces the development of state apparatus’ intervention into the individual creative work of the artists. The proposed conclusions prove the fact that under the circumstances of totalitarian arbitrariness civil society does not play a leading role. The paper tells the tragic fate of the unique work of art—The Wall of Memory—constructed during 1968–1982 at the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv. In 1982 the artwork was poured over with concrete. In 2018, following the intervention of civil society, 10 m2 of the artwork were uncovered.
