Methodological approach to analysing the country’s environmental security in the context of economic sustainability

Abstract The article is devoted to the development of a methodological approach to the analysis of the country’s environmental security in relation to economic sustainability. The paper argues that modern global challenges - climate change, degradation of natural resources, environmental pollution - directly affect the economic stability of states and require systematic assessment. Leading international organizations, in particular the EU, OECD, WHO, FAO and UNECE, offer multifactor indicator systems for monitoring the state of the environment. It is important for Ukraine to integrate these approaches into its own methodology for assessing security. The starting point is the Methodological Recommendations for Calculating the Level of Economic Security of Ukraine, which, although cancelled, retain their value due to the system of norming indicators and the scale of threshold levels (optimal, satisfactory, unsatisfactory, dangerous, critical). The article proposes adapting this toolkit to the environmental component by defining a set of indicators: the share of renewable energy in the transport sector, the structure of primary energy supply, the volume of polluted wastewater discharges, the level of waste disposal, the area of organic land, current expenses and capital investments in environmental protection activities. The practical application of the approach provides an objective basis for strategic planning, harmonization with European requirements and strengthening national economic sustainability in the conditions of post-war recovery.
