Summary The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of environmental pollution in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. This assessment utilized measurements of magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal concentrations on air filters. Over a period of 3.5 years (2015–2018), magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal concentrations (including Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were analyzed to characterize anthropogenic PM collected from seven air sampling stations. Studies of heavy metal concentrations in the air of Kyiv show that pollution levels vary significantly depending on the location of monitoring points and emission sources, transport infrastructure. Streets with heavy traffic in Kyiv exhibit elevated levels of Fe and Mn, comparable to those found in highly industrialized regions worldwide. Significant correlation coefficients were obtained between the magnetic susceptibility kV of dust and the content of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu in it. These elements form the main geochemical association that pollutes the air of Kyiv. Concentrations of heavy metals, such as Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb, are high in Kyiv but remain within European standards and maximum permissible concentrations, except in areas immediately adjacent to industrial sites. The findings provide a basis for more detailed measurements of the shifts in Kyiv’s ecological condition caused by the ongoing war.
