Davide Quayola: reformer of post-modern art

Three key aspects of the current problematic field of cultural studies, aesthetics, and art history are synthesized: first, the theoretical reconsideration of postmodern art in the context of the formation of the concept of metamodernism; second, the analysis of the artistic practice of D. Quayola as a subject of extensive professional debate; third, the delineation of the specificity of Quayola’s artistic thinking, which represents the transition from postmodernism to metamodernism and actualizes the transformation of cultural-historical experience within (post)contemporary artistic culture. Examples of existing approaches to qualifying D. Quayola’s artistic manner are reconstructed, emphasizing his attempts to synchronize the “past–present–future,” which in certain cases generates the effect of an “artistic paradox.” Particular attention is paid to the resonance of Quayola’s work with the problem of “craft–craftsmanship,” considered both in a historical-cultural perspective and in the interpretations proposed by proponents of metamodernism. It is demonstrated that the expansion of the problem field of the humanities has intensified the need for conceptual and categorical frameworks in studies addressing the transitional period from postmodernism to metamodernism. Consequently, both the development and the systematization of new terms, concepts, and even categories appear to be particularly relevant. By defining D. Quayola as a reformer of postmodern art, the study emphasizes the role of professional artists in innovative transformations within artistic practice, as well as the inherent ambiguity surrounding the reception of their experimental work.
