Changing employment strategies among today's Ukrainian youth: from multi- to trans-professionalism (a sociological analysis)
Анотація
This article is devoted to a sociological analysis of the transformation of employment strategies among contemporary Ukrainian youth against the backdrop of the digitalisation of the labour market and the challenges posed by the war. Its relevance stems from the shift from multi-professionalism (a set of isolated competences from different fields) to trans-professionalism (a willingness to go beyond one's own professional identity and operate in an inter-professional space) as a prerequisite for adaptability and competitiveness in the labour market. The aim of this article is to provide a sociological analysis of the determinants of the transformation of young people's employment strategies in the context of labour market precarisation. The methodological framework comprises a secondary analysis of sociological data (Future of Work 2030, the CEDOS/UNDP series 'The Impact of War on Young People in Ukraine', Plan International Ukraine) for the period 2021–2025, comparative-historical and content analysis, and theoretical modelling. A comparative-typological matrix of four employment strategies – mono-, multi-, inter- and trans-professionalism – has been developed based on criteria such as the boundaries of knowledge, type of thinking, values, advantages, risks and barriers. The dual nature of youth transprofessionalism has been established: the pre-war demand for horizontal mobility was value-driven, whilst the war period brought to the fore a forced, reactive dimension linked to the precarisation of the labour market and the situation of vulnerable population groups. A decline in the appeal of the IT sector and entrepreneurship has been observed, alongside a growing demand for digital literacy and stress resilience, as well as confirmation of the rationale behind interprofessionalism as an intermediate stage in staff retraining. The scientific novelty lies in the sociological interpretation of empirical data through the prism of theoretical models of transprofessionalism and career adaptation. The practical significance is determined by the possibility of using the results obtained to improve the state system for the retraining of young people and youth policy.
