Prioritising wellbeing of health workers at the heart of recovery efforts in Ukraine

“We risk dying when going to work”, Ukrainian nurse Tetiana Freishyn said in May 2022, when the world marked International Nurses Day.1 Ukraine has been going through a series of emergencies, starting from the Russian invasion in its eastern regions, followed by COVID-19 pandemic and, since 2022, the full-scale war, with its health-care workers always at the frontline of the response. Today, after more than three years of war, the situation is more devastating than ever before: as of 5 June, in 2025 alone, WHO has documented 212 attacks on health care—incidents in which health-care facilities were damaged or destroyed—bringing the total to more than 2442 attacks since 2022.
