Impact of war challenges on the state of the bank deposit market in Ukraine

This article examines the impact of war-related challenges on Ukraine’s bank deposit market. The key factors driving transformations in banks' deposit bases have been identified, including macroeconomic instability, exchange rate volatility, inflationary pressure, and shifts in depositor behaviour. The dynamics of deposit market structure are analysed, particularly the reorientation of depositors towards short-term deposits, an increase in the share of foreign currency savings, and a decline in public trust in the banking system. Research Objective – to assess the impact of war challenges on Ukraine’s deposit market, analyse structural changes in depositor behaviour, and develop recommendations for enhancing deposit base stability through improvements in deposit policy and regulatory mechanisms. Methodology. The study employs a comprehensive approach that combines statistical analysis of macroeconomic indicators, comparative analysis of deposit dynamics, and factor analysis of risks affecting the deposit base of banks. Comparative analysis methods are used to assess the impact of regulatory measures and macroeconomic changes on the structure of the deposit market. Results. The study demonstrates that the war has led to an outflow of long-term deposits, increased the level of deposit market dollarization, and necessitated adjustments in banks' deposit policies to new conditions. The feasibility of introducing deposit rate indexation mechanisms, expanding state guarantees on long-term deposits, and creating specialized savings programs to stimulate deposit inflows is substantiated.
